What I discovered, now that my four kids are young adults, is that they paid close attention to whether my words and actions were one in the same. They wanted to know that I was walking the talk, living an undivided life. I guess I passed as they tell me I had "life cred". Any influence I might have had was rooted in living my values, consistency of my message, creating safe space to talk and to sit in silence, respecting my children as individuals, listening deeply as they shared their concerns and fears, celebrating with them, laughing at myself with them, and loving them unconditionally. Realistic parenting begins with being real.
